Team Gleason - Better Now Than Never
Thursday, September 29, 2011 A friend of troysnoise, Steve Gleason recently made public that he's been diagnosed with ALS. Gleason played eight years for the New Orleans Saints and five years ago famously blocked a punt in the first game back to the city after Hurricane Katrina.
Alike me, Steve is a huge Pearl Jam fan. (Check out the blog posts about his PJ20 experience). We've posted two tracks with song titles and lyrics symbolic of Team Gleason's strength in approaching this new stage of his and his family's lives.
I'll leave the rest to Gleason:
In January 2011, I was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) A disease. Terminal. Approaching 34 years of age, I do not fit the typical ALS criteria as I am "too" young. An Outlier.
Although there are currently no medical solutions for this disease, I believe my body can be healed. Honesty leads to grace leads to healing. Recovery percentages for the ALS population are infinitesimally small. To heal, I must be… An Outlier.
Pearl Jam - "Amongst The Waves" I can see the light / Coming through the clouds in rays
Heal - We have faith that solutions to the mysteries of ALS exist. Team Gleason will work to evaluate today’s possible alternative solutions while simultaneously exploring advances in medical science through participation, partnership, and leadership in the ALS community.
Team Gleason will work to create an environment for families living with ALS that will enable them to not only survive, but also thrive.
Pearl Jam - "Given To Fly" His key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere
Inspire - We believe people are meant to truly live and enjoy life with each other. We plan to continue to participate in adventurous, innovative expeditions while fostering the passionate, honest and meaningful relationships of life.
Team Gleason believes that through these activities and relationships, we will be a source of inspiration to the remarkable people we come in contact with.
The challenges ahead are both real and daunting, but we expect the extraordinary. With support, creativity and perseverance, all things are possible.
